Germany & Austria: Riesling's Case for the Cellar

The wine world's most chronically underrated grape is also one of its most age-worthy. Why serious collectors are quietly building Riesling verticals — and what to buy.

By The Best Cellar Club Editors

Among master sommeliers, a quiet consensus holds that Riesling is the greatest white wine grape on earth — and among consumers, it remains burdened by the ghost of cheap sweet wine. That gap between expert reverence and market price is precisely where the collector's opportunity lives. Few wines age as profoundly, for as long, for as little money.

Why Riesling ages so well

Riesling's secret is a piercing natural acidity that acts as both preservative and slow-release fuse — the same mechanism, as we explain in aging white wine, that makes great whites age longer than many reds. Over decades it develops its famous petrol note, alongside honey, dried apricot, lime, and a stony, electric minerality. A great Mosel Riesling at thirty years is a religious experience and frequently costs less than a young village Burgundy.

The German hierarchy worth learning

The Prädikat system rewards a little study: Kabinett (light, ageable, brilliant with food), Spätlese and Auslese (richer, longer-lived), and the rare botrytized BA and TBA (nearly immortal dessert wines). Dry (trocken) and increasingly the Grosses Gewächs dry grand crus age superbly too. The Mosel, Rheingau, Nahe, and Pfalz each speak in a distinct accent.

Don't forget Austria

Austria's Wachau, Kremstal, and Kamptal produce dry Riesling (and Grüner Veltliner) of laser precision and serious aging potential — drier, often more powerful than their German cousins, and similarly undervalued. For a collector building an age-worthy white program at a fraction of Burgundy's cost, Germanic Riesling is the most intellectually and economically rewarding corner of the cellar.
